Bofinger Restaurant

by Wayne | March 30th, 2008

Bofinger RestaurantAt 5-7 Rue de Bastille, opposite the Bastille Opera House is the perfect finale after an evening at the opera. Although, you might find that this restaurant with its authentic art nouveau setting is busy at other times as well. You have a choice to make for your surroundings though when you enter the Bofinger. Downstairs will give you the nicest of surroundings, but upstairs is air conditioned for a little more comfort. I guess your choice could depend on the weather? The food here is fine, as it is at all Flo group restaurants. The best bet is probably to go for the brasserie meal of oysters and fillet steak washed down with a suitable wine. However, that’s not to say that the salmon, cod steak or calf’s liver should be overlooked. You won’t be breaking the bank to eat here either with an average meal costing somewhere in the region of 24.50 Euros for the main course.

The Bofinger restaurant is open from noon until 3pm and from 6.30pm until 12:30am Monday to Friday and from noon until 12:30am Saturday and Sunday. Why not checkout their website at www.bofingerparis.com.

Les Catacombes - A Tourist Destination for the Brave?

by Wayne | March 28th, 2008

Les Catacombes - The CatacombesThis is where the official entrance is to the massive network of underground tunnels that criss-cross their way across Paris, although there are lots more along the vast network. The 3000km network of subterranean passageways started their life as a series of quarries which provided the limestone needed for some of Paris’ more notable buildings, Notre Dame for instance. by the late 18th century when the city had become so big that it extended this far south, streets started to collapse and so in order to prevent this, tunnels and supports were constructed by the authorities to prop up the earth.

At the same time, with official burial sites overflowing in the age of the Revolutionary Terror, the bones of around 6 million people were transferred underground into les catacombes. The famous and infamous such as Marat and Robespierre and their associates are tightly packed in alongside their fellow countrymen along wall upon wall of bones and skulls.

Getting down to the level of the bones is not for the faint hearted as you descend down an 85 step spiral stair case. Take a torch with you and don’t be tempted to take a souvenir as bags are searched when you exit.

Les Catacombes is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 9.30am and 4pm and admission is 5 Euros. Under 14’s go free.

Gourmet Food Gems in Paris - Part 1

by Wayne | August 8th, 2007

Food is more of an art (and for some, a religion) in France, and if there’s one thing the French know how to do well, it’s food. So I knew I would be remiss in my duties if I did not go and seek out Paris’s finest gastronomic glories for my readers of paris-eiffel-tower-news.com. Sampling the following is not optional – it’s a must!!!

Go Organic Parisian Style

Paris is renowned for its local street food markets, which can be found in nearly every one if its quartiers (districts). The Rue Cler market is a very famous one, the Rue de Levis is another one almost as famous. The wonderful symbiosis of ‘traditional and parochial’ with the ‘grand and capital’ undoubtedly lends Paris its unique character. …read full articles of "Gourmet Food Gems in Paris - Part 1"

French Impressionism in the Heart of Paris

by Wayne | June 5th, 2007

It’s safe to say that for many of us, when we think of the centuries of art that have served to fix Paris as the cultural capital of Europe, what comes to mind above all else, perhaps even the soaring towers of Notre Dame and the Place de la Concorde’s gold capped obelisk, is the work of the French Impressionists. Manifesting a sense of urban bustle that is unexpectedly punctuated by moments of aesthetic sublimity, it is no wonder that these painters of light have come to define a collective and indelible visual representation of the City of Light’s true vibrancy….. …read full articles of "French Impressionism in the Heart of Paris"

Finding your way Around Paris

by Wayne | May 10th, 2007

Paris Metro

Paris is a huge city with so much to see and do, but despite its size, it’s so easy to get around. The public transport system is excellent so it’s possible to hop from one attraction to the next without any trouble, meaning that you can pack lots of great activities into a short weekend break. Here’s a short guide to getting around quickly and easily, from your arrival right up to your departure.

Arriving by air: Paris has two major airports - Orly and Charles de Gaulle. All the big airlines fly into these two airports. There’s another airport called Beauvais, which is quite a bit further out of Paris. It’s served mainly by budget airlines such as Ryanair. If you don’t mind a rather long journey into Paris, it can be a good cheap way to fly to the city…. …read full articles of "Finding your way Around Paris"

A Guide to The Louvre, Paris

by Wayne | May 9th, 2007

Le Louvre

The Musée du Louvre is undoubtedly one of the world’s finest art collections, and there would be nowhere more fitting to house such a collection than the magnificent Louvre Palace, an immense Renaissance complex once used as the residence of French royalty

There’s so much to see that it would be possible to spend a whole day or more exploring it. Here’s a guide to the building and the splendid works of art within it, to help plan a visit to the Louvre and see the best of what it has to offer.

History: The original building on this site was a fortress constructed by King Phillipe-Auguste in the 12th century to protect the city from the Vikings. The Louvre then evolved over the centuries to meet the needs of its various inhabitants. The first significant alterations were made by Francois I, who had a brand new Renaissance palace built, and from then a succession of monarchs and rulers all left their mark, extending and altering it until it became the stunning vast complex that it is today…. …read full articles of "A Guide to The Louvre, Paris"

Eating out in Paris on a Budget

by Wayne | May 8th, 2007

Paris Flag CafeThis is Paris and it is raining, which is as it should be. Paris rain is not as the rain of other cities. It is softer, benevolent. It caresses, rather than soaks.

Perhaps the main reason I come to Paris is because of the food. Not that I am a true gourmet. More a gourmand. It is perfectly possible to spend an arm and a leg on food in Paris. I am still in a state of shock after paying $17.50 for a single glass of beer. Granted, I was sitting on the pavement on the Champs Elysees and granted, I could have sat there all day. But I am still in shock. Normally I steer well away from such high-priced nonsense

When you go to Paris - and you should go at least once in a lifetime - make your own discoveries. I am assured it is possible to get a bad meal in Paris. It simply has never happened to me. At the following restaurants you will only get great meals…. …read full articles of "Eating out in Paris on a Budget"
